Types Of Estimates

Know What Your Moving Quote / Estimate Means. There are Two types of Quotes: Binding Moving Quotes / Estimates and Non-Binding Moving Quotes / Estimates.

Non-Binding Moving Quotes / Estimates

A non-binding moving quote / estimate is required to be in writing and detail all of the services required for your move. Actual cost may vary slightly, but must be in agreement with the moving company’s tariffs, which are published and public record. When receiving a non-binding estimate, be sure that the fees estimated are associated with the service order and the bill of lading accompanying your shipment. Do not sign these documents if the amount quoted to you by the mover is not clearly on the forms.

A non-binding moving quote / estimate is NOT a legal contract with either party. It is not a contract concerning the price or the hiring of services. The mover’s quote / estimate binds neither party. Nor, is it a guarantee that the charges will not exceed the quote / estimate. It is merely an educated guess at what the total charges will be for your move. However, the moving company can only require you to pay the original estimate plus ten percent, when your shipment arrives at its final destination. Generally, a 30 day period for payment is granted. Any fees for any additional services NOT included in the quote / estimate, but asked for by the customer, may be due in full upon the delivery of your goods.

Binding Moving Quotes / Estimates

Binding moving quotes / estimates, if accepted, are more in-line with a contractual agreement. These are also required to be in writing, detailed, and a copy should be made for you prior to the moving date. Another difference in a binding moving quote / estimate is that there may be a fee for the quote / estimate itself. However, with this type of quote / estimate you are NOT responsible for any charges above those on the quote / estimate for the services detailed. However, movers may charge more than the binding quote / estimate if there are unforeseen services required (that was not on the quote / estimate) at your new home such as: stair, elevator, long carrying distances, etc. These fees are due upon delivery. The amount on the binding quote / estimate is due in full upon the delivery of your goods. Payment arrangements are usually made prior to the move at the time of the acceptance of the binding quote / estimate.
